Firefighter Shot While Investigating Fire

I saw this on the local news and felt sick to my stomach. Why the hell would someone shoot at a Fireman?

Chicago, IL. --

A veteran Chicago firefighter remains in serious but “stable” condition Sunday morning following surgery after being shot on the Southeast Side while investigating a fire.

The firefighter, who works in the Office of Fire Investigations, responded to the 2900 block of East 80th Street about 3:30 a.m. for a working fire, Fire Media Affairs Asst. Director Eve Rodriguez said.

Shots were fired, and he was hit by a bullet, Rodriguez said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, is in his 40s and is an 18-year-veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, Rodriguez said.

He remains in serious but "stable" condition following surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Sunday morning, Rodriguez said. He was initially taken in serious condition following the shooting.

Police responded to the shooting at 2949 E. 80th St. about 4:36 a.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak, who said the firefighter was investigating a fire in the alley when he was shot.

Police had no information regarding an offender as of Sunday morning.

Chicago Fire Dept. Commissioner Ray Orozco is expected to provide an update of the man's condition at noon at the CFD Memorial Park at Lake Shore Drive and 31st Street.
